Kim Wempe to open the Rawlins Cross “Heart Head Hands Tour” of Atlantic Canada this January

Winner of the 2010 ECMA for Galaxie Rising Star of the Year, singer-songwriter Kim Wempe will appear as special guest to Rawlins Cross on their Atlantic Canada tour supporting the release of the group’s new album Heart Head Hands Jan. 13-22.

Painting With Tides (GroundSwell/Warner) released in September 2010 by Wempe is a powerful collection of contemporary Canadian roots music.  Wempe has a voice that “…lets loose a powerful force pouring out her emotions…,” said The Cape Breton Post. “She is the real deal,” said ArtsEast and the Moncton Times & Transcript said “She has a roots-rock, folky sound that blends the traditional with contemporary and a voice that brings to mind Bonnie Raitt or a mellow Janis Joplin. Wempe is an artist to keep an eye on as talent like this can’t go unnoticed.”

Recorded at Echo Chamber Studio in Halifax with Charles Austin (Buck 65, Matt Mays, Jenn Grant), the eleven-song album features collaborations with three of the region’s best musical talents: Joel Plaskett, Old Man Luedecke and Thom Swift along with Saskatchewan’s Geoff Hilhorst of the Deep Dark Woods.

Born in Saskatchewan, Wempe uprooted to Alberta and then to the East Coast.  After three months in Nova Scotia, she realized that her daunting and unplanned move had transpired for a reason. The change of scenery and people provided the theme of Painting With Tides and nurtured a fresh view on life, home, self and music.’

Wempe released her first EP Where I Need To Be in May 2009 and it was awarded the 2009 Folk Recording of the Year at the Nova Scotia Music Awards.  This year, Wempe had a memorable performance at the 2010 ECMAs impressing everyone in the room, including keynote speaker, BBC’s Bob Harris.  After playing a full band set, she ended with a solo performance of her heart-wrenching song, Oh Heart that was later featured on the Showcase television series “Crash and Burn” and earned her a semi-finalist spot in the International Songwriting Competition.   She also performed at the Vancouver Olympics, JUNOFEST in St. John’s, and has shared stages with numerous artists, including Royal Wood, Taylor Swift, Jill Barber, Jenn Grant, Amelia Curran, and Justin Rutledge.
